Style Guide: Black Shoes for Men

 History of Black shoes

In early 18th century England, a group of men, known as "dandies" wore black silk or satin knee breeches with highly polished black boots and long sticks tucked under the arm, called canes. Black shoes were worn by dandies because it was thought that they would not be soiled as easily as brown ones.

Black Leather shoes are the beginning of all fashion. Black leather has been an icon of male sophistication and style since, well, forever. Sleek and classic, a great pair of black formal shoes for men will never go out of style and are perfect for almost any occasion. Keep it classic with a pair of black leather slip-on dress shoes, or make some noise in iconic mid-height boots. Either way, these shoes are sure to accent any outfit without competing with it.

Types of Shoes-

  • Oxfords Shoes

  • Derby Shoes

  • Loafer Shoes

  • Boots

  • Monk Strap Shoes

  • Sneakers

  • Brogue Shoes

Black Oxford Shoes:

Leather black shoes are made with the softest leather. It features classic cut men's lace-up oxford shoes, contrasting colors, welt stitching, and sturdy rubber soles.  A close lace system, round toe shape, and leather lining complete the design. The slip-on style of these black leather oxford shoes keeps them comfortable for everyday use. Available in classic colors like brown, gray, and navy, they're great for just about any business or party event, and are perfectly matched with slacks or khakis in the office to a pair of jeans for casual shirts.

Black Derby Shoes:

The Derby(open-lacing system) is a classic style of shoe that is traditionally black with the side lacing; over the last 30 years, it has been re-released and updated in many different colors. A slightly higher cut than the Oxford, made popular in the 19th century for its smart look, today's Derby shoes are built to be more robust and are a great choice for formal business wear. Barker derby shoes have an open lacing system and leather soles which make them great for use in wet weather conditions.

Black Loafers:

Barker classic loafer shoes can be slipped on and off with ease - even in situations that require formal dress. Leather is used for the upper, and comfortable rubber soles were added. With their generously cushioned footbeds, they feature orthopedic arch support that keeps you comfortable throughout the day.

Black boots:

The black leather Chelsea boot  strikes a great compromise between style and comfort. It is made of the finest leather and therefore can be worn in all seasons. The interior of these functional lace-up shoes is specially padded to reduce pressure to growing feet, and the molded sole offers an extra layer of comfort to accommodate the impact from jumping and running through a soccer field.

Monk Strap Shoes:

Monk Strap shoes are handmade with the finest leathers and usually come in width B. The single strap and double monk straps are offered in selected colors. Monk Straps are a modern, dressy sandal that will dress up a pair of faded blue jeans or go well with the black suit. The monk straps also allow for tensioning around the foot to give the back of the foot room to breathe which is not usually found in other styles.

Black Sneakers:

Barker "sneakers" are black and made from a durable leather. They have an 8-hole lace system with metal eyelets for comfort. They also have a cushioned insole. The upper is made of 60% polyester microfiber and 40% cotton, giving the material a smooth look, ideal for parties. The composition makes the shoe more breathable than traditional leather shoes. The sole is flexible and shock absorbent.

Brogue Shoes:

Inspired by the past, present and future of the footwear industry. Brogue shoes go way back in time to an era when men wore daily dress shoes with broguing and an upper shaft to protect the leather from rain and mud. In recent years, many men have taken to pairing their suit pants with a pair of Wingtip Dress shoes that are similar in style to the Brogue. Barker Brogue shoes have the classic Brogue pattern on top of our highly specialized Goodyear welted construction, making them unique.

Barker London flagship stores and selected Barker stockists offer a wide range of Men's Oxford and Derby shoes.
